A year ago today I was getting ready to reveal to the world something that I knew would change my whole life and how everyone would view me. I was about to reveal Neil A. King the writer and my decision to self-publish my novel series. From then until now, 2018 has been quite the year, and one that’s significant in my life for so many reasons.
January and February were two very hectic months as I prepared to release Atlantic Split, book 1 in The Luke Bright Series. The place it all begins. On February 19th, Atlantic Split was available to purchase and my book was finally out there in the big wide world. Ready to be read. The sales started to come and the reviews did too. It was a fantastic feeling, but I knew it wasn’t over.
With spring came marketing and as soon as I could, I made a start on getting book 2, At Liberty To Live, ready for an autumn release. Summer followed the same steady pace, but when autumn arrived it all got busy again!
On October 22nd, I released my second book. Now, I was a second time author. I’d never considered how it would feel to do this twice over but now, it started to feel serious. I’d published a sequel, half of my series in a year. Now, I felt like a real author.
But 2018 wasn’t just a significant year for me, because it was also the year that Luke Bright started his adventure in his alternate reality. It’s fitting that both he and I started our journeys of a lifetime in the same year and took the first step to following our dreams. Whilst we’ll be spending our New Year’s Eves quite differently, (Luke’s one involves a dinosaur costume!) I’ve never felt closer to him than I have this year. We’ve done well to get this far, Luke.
So, as 2019 approaches, I look back at 2018 with a feeling of achievement. It’s been a big year for me and a big year for Luke Bright.
Back in Atlantic Split, Luke said the following as he reminisced over his birthday wish when he turned nineteen:
“I wished that this would be the best year of my life so far. That I would finally be able to make a new start and put the past behind me. That this would be the year I would finally find out who I was going to be.” –Luke Bright, Atlantic Split-
I can look back on 2018 and proudly say that did find out too. Because 2018 was the year of the writer. Me, I became the writer.
