The first reveal of December

An Undercover Dream ended with a lot of big reveals that lead the way into the fourth and final book of The Luke Bright Series. This month, I’m going to be discussing these four big moments and how they affect that final book.

Warning! This blog contains spoilers

Reveal 1: Luke’s mental health problems and alcoholism

When Luke lost out on his life at Riverdene and went back on the run, his mental health took a shocking nose dive as he battled with depression and alcoholism towards the end of An Undercover Dream. Everyone around him noticed something wasn’t right, but as readers, you probably noticed the tone of the book change completely.

From the together, maturer version of character we got to know over the start and middle of the book, Luke regressed back to who he was in Atlantic Split, but coupled with depression and a low mood you can really feel through the writing. He changed and the narrative is much grittier than it ever was, and that’s something that’s going to carry on into book 4.

I’ve always said that book is one of the heaviest things I’ve ever written – not just in size, but the whole story feels much darker and every word carries something with it. You can really feel the effort Luke’s going through every day to just keep on top of his life, and it is hard sometimes to read. Let’s just say, this is your warning to prepare yourself for an absolute emotional rollercoaster of a novel which I absolutely loved writing.

But, as we go into book 4 (and a separate reveal which I will discuss more about later), Luke’s mental health is one burden he has to take home with him. As he aims to head back to the UK to his family, he’s absolutely terrified that they won’t like the person he’s become. He’s not the son that left them all that time ago, he’s changed and he’s worried if it’s ever going to be the same again. He’s built up this picture in his head of going home to his family all smiles and happiness, but the reality is set to be a lot darker and less positive. It’s hard for him to deal with, and he doesn’t like who he’s become, so why would his family? It’s an adjustment he’s not ready for, despite being so desperate to go home.

Luke’s depression has changed his life forever, as mental health conditions do, and carrying it alongside with him makes his journeys much heavier. But, he’s desperate to keep it in check and use it as a force to power him as opposed to hinder him. Let’s just say, seeing how it affects him and what he goes through in book 4 is going to lead to a very different style of story, that makes it the best book of the series.
