The most important part of a book, to me at least, is the characters. They’re the ones who have to face the battles, deal with personal growth and all the pain that mean ol’ authors put them through. I am forever grateful for these characters who, though I haven’t known them as long as my others, have made this book series what it is.
When I started writing the series, I wanted to reflect the real society of millennials that exist. Each of them have their own different personalities, different motivations, different challenges that they face and all of these factors, plus more, have made them become the people they are right now. I did a lot of research into why millennials become the way they are, and a lot of it has to do with how we’re raised, but also the opportunities we get and society itself. The good, the bad, the all of it – just like in reality, everyone’s past shapes their present and their future.
In The Snowflake Army, I have my millennial musketeers, Leah, Max and Shawn who are my main cast, and you can find out much more about them in a blog I did about them last year. Check it out here!
But here’s a slightly shorter overview of them and the supporting crew you’ll find in this book.
Leah Carlton
Protective, sassy and yet slightly cynical, she’s been through it growing up surrounded by a largely white community. Following the horrific events of the previous day where her brother sided with the MTM and Leah was forced to kill him, Leah’s left trying to ignore her grief and her family. Her life will never be the same again and she can’t forgive herself. The guilt is eating her up, and she’s taking out her emotions on her friends. But they’re treating this situation as personal growth, and they haven’t lost what she’s lost. Will Leah be able to come to terms with what she’s done? And will the rift that’s forming between her and the guys get resolved before it’s too late?
Max Ward
AKA. Millennial Max which is his influencer name. A typical woke millennial who dreams of making a difference to the world. Now he is, by leading his generation in a fight against the MTM. Max is swiftly gaining followers on his influencer account and feels far more confident than he did before. It’s everything he’s ever wanted. However, he’s still that same naive, sheltered guy and even though he’s broken away from his overprotective mum, is he really fit to lead this cause? When things take an unexpected turn, Max soon realises he’s out of his depth. And his huge mistake is about to cost them everything…
Shawn Parker
Shy, awkward and hates attention. But he’s super smart and a high achiever. But the pressure to succeed has meant Shawn’s unable to hold down a job due to his depression and anxiety. He knows he has to tell Max and his parents the truth about what he’s been through soon. He can’t hide it for much longer, it’s not fair. Today, however, trying to help his generation is his priority, and he’s determined to save as many people as possible, after setting them back yesterday when he killed the mayor before they could find out the remaining locations of the traps being carried out today. Will Shawn be able to make up for his mistakes and finally reveal his secrets? Especially when he meets someone who changes everything for him…
Ben Carlton
Ben is Leah’s younger brother and is a rebellious, smart and savvy young guy who now has to be strong for his family. Following the previous day’s events, Leah instructs him to stay with their family, believing it’s the best place for him right now. Ben however, wants to tag along with the trio as, even though he’s not a millennial, he believes he can help. Leah, however, refuses. She can’t lose another brother. Will Ben be able to prove his sister wrong? We might have to wait a bit longer to see what Ben’s capable of…
Emma Rogers
AKA VeganQueen98 (her influencer name). Emma’s been a follower of Millennial Max for a few months and Max is quite smitten with her, even though Leah and Shawn don’t believe she’s real. However, fate brings her and Max together (something Leah doesn’t appreciate) and Max is head over heels. Emma’s a Gen Z, but seems determined to help the cause. She’s confident and can certainly hold her own. But upon meeting the trio, she seems distracted… What exactly is going on with her? Are Leah’s instincts about her right or is she overreacting due to jealousy?
Zara Dhillon
A feisty, spirited millennial who’s come to stay with her parents for the weekend after walking out on her nasty husband. However, she soon realises something is very wrong in her parents’ village and is determined to make things right. She’s a natural born leader and certainly puts Max in his place when she meets the trio. But behind that strong facade, Zara’s hiding plenty of secrets. One in particular that will change her whole life. Can she and Max work together to help their fellow snowflakes or will her past keep holding her back?
Odd Sock (Os for short)
Os is a famous indie singer and Shawn’s long-time idol. They came out as pansexual and non-binary a few years back and also stopped hiding their Polish ethnicity too. Now, out and proud, Os is thriving. After making it big in the noughties, they’ve developed a real celebrity attitude. They can be pretty blunt and self-absorbed at times, but deep down they’re extremely generous and kind. Leah however, doesn’t get the novelty and the two clash several times. Shawn and Os however, is a completely different story…
Katarzyna (Kasia) Petrowski
Kasia is sweet-natured, kind and extremely smart. She’s a language teacher, but her real specialism is chemistry. Secretly, she thrives on adrenaline so jumps at the chance to help the trio, especially Leah whom she forms a solid friendship with. As Os’s big sister, she’s always been in the shadows. After moving them away from Poland many years earlier, Os soared while Kasia’s life remained stagnant. But despite their bickering, she always puts them first. But why is she really so defensive over Os? And what’s the secret she’s keeping that Leah can never find out?
I can’t wait for you to see how my main trio develop in this book and how they interact with the new characters that make up a crucial part of this series. I hope you love them as much as I love them.
