Drown them out

The past few weeks have seemed extremely unjust for people in the UK. We’ve had many instances which have brought to light the bigotry that still exists and seems to be rising. However, one thing that’s important to remember is this:

THE LOUDEST VOICE ISN’T ALWAYS THE RIGHT ONE

A few weeks ago, the dance group Diversity performed a dance about the events of the year on Britain’s Got Talent, and BLM was included within this. Tens of thousands of people complained and twitter was flooded with their hatred. It felt like the world was full of these racists, and whilst people have claimed in the past that Britain isn’t a racist country, that goes to show that it absolutely is, and we can’t hide from that, and they shouldn’t be able to either. Yet, thankfully and rightly so, ITV and Ofcom did the right thing and gave no consideration to the complaints. It was a light in the dark that we all hoped would remain shining and the fight to move things forward.

Again, then, recently the Gender Recognition Act was rejected in parliament. Coupled with the hatred and abuse that always seems to be circulating on twitter towards the trans community, it’s a real kick in the teeth. But know that there are people out there who are fighting back and are determined to make a difference, even though it may not seem like it.

The world may seem to be filled of people spewing hatred, but there’s a reason why. It’s because they have no morals that stop them. They don’t think about their actions and they just do. They have a platform that allows them anonymity and it gives them strength because no one can call them out. Most of them wouldn’t say it in public, but online, they feel they can. They’re happy for an argument, even if it doesn’t make sense. They’ll say anything to aggravate and try to pull the sensible people down to their level. That’s why people find it hard to speak out and voice their opinions, because they know there’s so many idiots out there who’ll jump on and try to discredit them. Fighting against them isn’t worth it because you can’t make them see sense. So people don’t do it.

But we need to start to. Because if people don’t see the other side of the argument, they won’t know it’s there. They won’t know that there are people to defend them and they’ll feel swamped and alone within the hatred. We all have a responsibility to back each other up and fight for what’s right, even if there are other people out there watching and waiting to pull us down. Some people’s minds can’t be changed, and we shouldn’t waste our time arguing with them, but what we must do, is make sure our voices can drown them out, so we can bring hope back to those who are looking for that light in the darkness.

So, make your voice heard and stand up for what’s right. It’s scary, it’s absolutely terrifying and it isn’t easy. But it’s the right thing to do.
