Making up for lost time

One of the most significant threads that runs through The Luke Bright Series is Luke’s relationship with his father. Back in Atlantic Split, their relationship is tested, but the friction between them goes way back to his childhood. Frank (Luke’s dad) was always distant from Luke and never respected Luke’s choices – wanting him instead to follow in his footsteps. Now, as Luke heads back to the UK in A Long Lost Time, it’s time for him to confront his father once more.

Whilst Luke’s relationship with his dad has always been a part of the series, the loss of my own father has only made those scenes more meaningful. 9 years today – how time has flown. I suppose in a book you always want to make up for what you couldn’t make right in reality, and I’ll admit, sometimes I find myself wishing I could live through those reunion scenes in real life.

For Frank, Luke leaving left a lot of unresolved emotions and in this book a lot gets uncovered that makes him realise the effect of his mistakes on his son. It’s hard for the two of them to comprehend it all, but it makes for some really touching moments that Luke’s needed all along. After all, only one man can be his father, and no matter how many friends he makes and learns from, there’s no one else who can fill that void like his dad can.

It’s, however, not just their father-son relationship that’s put into focus in this book, and you’ll soon get to see how else this dynamic works. I’m excited to let you into the secrets I’ve been keeping in this book and see how it all ties in together. I hope you’re ready!

So, what else can I say on today of all days? I suppose all I can really say is how different I wish things were and how much I miss him. It was writing that got me through and it’s what’s got me this far, so being able to write these moments helps try to fill this void I have too. I just hope that by repairing Luke and Frank’s relationship, I’ll be able to one day too get my chance to make up for the lost time I never got to have.
