As The Luke Bright Series concludes this year, I’m taking the next few months in the lead up to A Long Lost Time’s release to reflect back on the previous books in the series. What I’ve learnt along the way, what went on, and how it sets up for the epic finale that concludes Luke’s adventures. This week, I’m discussing the third book in the series, An Undercover Dream.
An Undercover Dream is a unique book, because it’s the first time in the series that Luke really gets to stand on his own two feet away from his friends. It’s all about independence, but more so than At Liberty To Live, because this time, Luke’s doing what he’s always wanted. He’s heading off to acting school – a dream he was never allowed to pursue back in the UK, but now in the USA with his own life to lead and greater freedom (in some cases), he’s giving it a chance. This whole experience has made him realise life’s too short, and he’s excited for his new start.
At the acting school, Luke finds himself as one of the older people in his year group and that also means he’s one of the more ‘life-experienced’. It makes him a really great asset to the school and his peers, it’s there he develops more confidence and leadership skills. He feels on top of the world in a beautiful city with all his dreams coming true. Yet, he’s in for some huge challenges and a lot of drama there. It’s an interesting series of events that leads up to the huge climatic ending which he never saw coming.
So, what can I say I’ve learnt about this book since publishing? Being the penultimate book in the series, An Undercover Dream really sets up A Long Lost Time well in terms of tone. It’s maybe not something everyone will understand or agree with, but the tone that carries throughout A Long Lost Time is one that I think shows Luke at his absolute rawest. The themes in this book still continue to surprise me and I think out of all the books in the series, this one has my favourite overall arc. It hits differently to Atlantic Split and At Liberty To Live and quite honestly, after A Long Lost Time, it’s my next favourite. Plus, I’ve also learnt that the story I came up with in this book, which wasn’t the original plot by no means, is definitely one that works better than I could ever have imagined!
I’ve always loved An Undercover Dream, although the process of writing it was most certainly a journey. One that went through ups and downs, but ended fantastically. I’m so happy with how it went and, as it comes with some huge twists towards the end, I’m excited for you to see how that all plays out in A Long Lost Time when it’s published later this year.
