As The Luke Bright Series concludes this year, I’m taking the next few months in the lead up to A Long Lost Time’s release to reflect back on the previous books in the series. What I’ve learnt along the way, what went on, and how it sets up for the epic finale that concludes Luke’s adventures. This week, I’m discussing the second book in the series, At Liberty to Live.
At Liberty To Live picks up exactly where Atlantic Split left off, and it’s drama and action from the word go. Luke’s mission to get his friends back to the USA is by no means straight forward and the trio are thrust into a series of adventures before they can finally rest in a world Luke never thought he’d see – the United States of America.
It’s a brand new experience for him, one he never expected and he’s no where near ready for the new start he thought he was prepared for. He’s got a lot of growing up to do, especially now he’s thousands of miles away from the family who sheltered him so much. Being in this unfamiliar situation proves a challenge, but one that becomes the making of him. With new people to meet and a journey of growth ahead of him, Luke discovers exactly what he’s meant to do with his life. Make other’s lives better.
The Luke that begins this story is so different to the Luke we end it with, and the transformation he undergoes is one of my favourite parts of the whole series. It’s a journey into adulthood that a lot of us can relate to, but with the added threat of being on the run for murder in a country you’re a fugitive in complicates matters. That’s one thing that Luke certainly takes away from the book at the end – life can never be normal if you’re on the run.
So, what can I say I’ve learnt about this book since publishing? Well, I’ve learnt that At Liberty To Live is a bit like the opposite of what happens in A Long Lost Time. The journey from the UK to the USA is filled with excitement and peril, yet the return journey seems more emotionally-muted despite it’s significance. That’s because of who Luke is at the start of A Long Lost Time and the journey he’s been on since. And as he returns to old haunts and meets old faces, I think everyone can see the difference and the toll being on the run has taken on him.
At Liberty To Live was a struggle to both write and publish, but I love getting such positive reviews of something that I worked so hard to create. When I published it back in 2018, I almost wasn’t prepared – I’d only ever anticipated how it would feel publishing one book, I never envisioned what the launch of that book would be like. Next week I’ll be sharing what happens in the third book of the series – An Undercover Dream and how Luke’s story comes to a head right before the big finale late this year.
