It’s been such a strange 2020 and none of us could’ve expected something so small to make such an impact throughout the whole world. In the UK, we’re approaching nearly two months in lockdown, and as I look back at where we were a year ago, everything was so vastly different. So what’s next year going to be like? Well, we can only speculate.
It’s going to take a long time to get back to some sense of normal, that’s true, and there’s a good chance it won’t be over. Every part of our lives will have changed and we’ll be changed too from what happened. It’s been a strain on us all, and it’s made us all so much more humble and grateful for what we have.
So in a year’s time, will we look back on something better or worse? Who knows, but I think even in these times of difficulty, the resilience and innovativeness of people has been amazing. How everyone has adapted and tried to manage, even changing their whole businesses or vocations just so they could cope with what’s happening in the world. The human kindness we’ve seen has been fantastic, and even though there have been many people who haven’t been so nice and used COVID-19 as a way to prey on and benefit from others, needless to say it’s a world a year ago we wouldn’t have recognised.
It’s a bit like living in a dystopia (well, in fact it is) – where some parts of the previous way of life can still be distinguished and remembered, but everything has changed so much, we can’t say it’s the same world we left behind. There’s always hope that it’ll go back to how it was, but in fact, the only way now is to move forward and try to keep adapting to the challenges ahead. We’ve done a great job so far, and I’m certain that in a year’s time, we’re going to have seen even more innovative ways of adapting to a world where we have to live alongside coronavirus.
It’s tough, it’s so tough and it’s hard to find any sort of hope, but we must look at how far we’ve come and try to keep going in the best way we can. Maybe in a year’s time, things will be different, but probably because we’ve made them different. We’ve had to make them different so we can keep surviving in this world. Let’s just hope we’re going in the right direction. Stay safe everyone and I hope you’re all doing okay.
