It’s been over two years since I first self-published Atlantic Split. In that time, I’ve published two other books and now, I’m getting ready to publish a fourth. It’s been a whirlwind and has gone so fast. So what have I learnt in that time?

Well, one thing I’ve learnt is that being a writer is very hard work. It’s a full time job that’s hard to fit around other work, but it is possible. It just takes up a lot of free time! Sometimes, you just can’t be bothered, and that’s okay. But you really have to love what you do to dedicate so much time to it.

Another thing I’ve learnt is that self publishing is 100% the way forward for me as a writer. I look at all the things I can control and decisions I can make and realise, it wouldn’t be possible with traditional publishing. Sure, it’s hard in other ways, but I love being in charge of everything like this.

And, on that note – self publishing is also extremely hard to earn money from. I think it’s going to be a long time until most self published authors can make enough money from publishing to survive. But the rewards of it are much greater than the losses, because I still have a job, so I can afford to publish, and at least now I have an endless platform to work on, and I can write as many books as I want. I can write for the rest of my life and base my whole writing career around me. And that’s exciting.

Finally, and it’s probably obvious, I’ve realised just how lucky I am to be a writer. To have been able to make this decision and roll with it. Successful or not, I am so lucky I’ve been able to find and achieve my passion. I’m lucky to be able to create these worlds and stories so easily and love writing as much as I do. Lots of people don’t find that.

So, what’s next? Of course, A Long Lost Time is coming within the year, but I’m sure there’s plenty of other books along the way. It’ll be interesting to get to know the new characters I haven’t met yet and see what their stories are like. All I know is I’m grateful for all the support readers like you give me, and I’m far from ever slowing down on this self publishing journey.
