A Long Lost Time came back from the editor last week, and least to say, there’s a lot to be done! Not because there’s lots to change, but it takes a lot to get everyone on the same page. I’ll delve into what that means in this week’s blog.
My editor has done a fantastic job and I’m extremely grateful. However, when you send a book to be edited, don’t expect an easy time after. Some authors may assume the editor is always right and just press ‘accept all changes.’ My advice? Don’t.
The reason why is because whilst an editor can look at a book from an objective level, they can’t do it subjectively. Some points are lost on them that as an author seem obvious. For example, as this editor hasn’t read my whole series, changes were suggested that didn’t fit with what happened before. You can’t expect them to know that, nor should you. It’s not their job. It’s up to you to make sure that what they’ve suggested makes the most sense and is right for you. It’s not you being precious, it’s you understanding your book better than anyone else.
I think in essence, I will be accepting only around 50% of my editors suggestions which is fine. Though it may make you wonder whether an editor is therefore necessary. Oh yes, they certainly are. Every book deserves a decent edit and a fresh pair of eyes and it really helps make the book what you need it to be to successfully publish. So never ignore your editor, but just remember that at the end of the day, you’re the writer, it’s your book and your choice.
So, I have a very busy couple of months ahead as I will be editing intensely! But it’ll be worth it for sure once A Long Lost Time is ready to be released into the world.
Atlantic Split, At Liberty To Live and An Undercover Dream, the first three books in The Luke Bright Series are available to purchase NOW! The final book of the series A Long Lost Time will be released in 2020!
