In last week’s blog, I discussed my book covers, and whilst these are important, it’s what’s on the inside that really counts. Especially if a reader is going to be looking at your book for hundreds of pages, you want to make the interior just as appealing. So this week, I’m focusing on designing the inside of a book.

There are numerous different software options out there, or you could get someone to do it for you, but my choice is a fantastic software called Vellum. The strap-line of ‘creating beautiful books’ is certainly true for this software. It costs $199.99 to create unlimited ebooks or $249.99 to create unlimited ebooks and paperbacks.

When I was first looking for interior book software, I did my research but eventually decided on Vellum because I loved the styles it provided. Since I first downloaded it, it’s got even more interesting features which I’m excited to explore. It gives you freedom to choose fonts, layouts, paragraph break illustrations and it organises the book in a great way. All you have to do is import your word document and it does all the hard work for you. And it looks effortless.

But the best thing is seeing what the book looks like when it is printed, because whilst it shows you what the book looks like on different devices, it’s only when that book is in your hands you realise how professional it looks. You wouldn’t even realise it was self published. It really helps a book stand out and meet the standards of the rest of the industry.

I believe getting a good interior book design is well worth spending money on, and even though you can use free ways of designing your interior, it’s well worth downloading proper software that makes your inside pages look just as beautiful as your cover. You could also get someone else to do it for you, but I love having my own choices and Vellum is so easy to use. I highly recommend Vellum and have had zero issues with it. It’s an extremely worthwhile investment, and the fact you can make unlimited books with it for a set price means you’ll always have the option of creating beautiful books for life.
