The 50k challenge

The 50k challenge – of course I’m talking about NaNoWriMo, where writers across the world take on the challenge of writing a novel in the 30 days of November. This year, I’m taking part so I thought for this week’s blog, I’d update you on how it’s all going.

The first three days were fantastic – I absolutely blitzed through my word count and quickly got to 15K – 3/10 of the way through. However, during the week things started slowly a little, but I persisted hitting the recommended daily word count and now on day 14 my word count is 41,269. However, now there is another issue.

The story I’ve planned won’t actually be long enough to write 50,000 words – it was always a concern of mine, but it could easily be wrapped up in 40,000 words. That meant I needed to plan another ending, but with another 16 days left, it should be doable.

I’ll admit, it’s been a lot less challenging than I thought it would be, but only because I planned it so well to start. If I had gone in cold, I wouldn’t be where I am now and would’ve probably given up. So the biggest takeaway, for anyone thinking about participating next year, is to plan, plan, plan. Now, I’m sort of free styling towards the ending and I can really see the difference.

It has however been a really fun thing to be part of, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of the month brings. Hopefully once I read through it all again, I will find even more ways to hit that word count and make the story even better. Of course, it’s no where near publication yet, but it’s a good starting point and I can see this book going far.
