Welcome to my eight-part blog series about the main themes in An Undercover Dream. You may have read my previous blog series on the themes of Atlantic Split and At Liberty To Live, so now it’s the turn of book 3 in the series. You can find the links to the previous blogs at the bottom of this blog post. There will be some crossover between the three books. This week, the theme is more like a destination – one that carries throughout the whole series. Self acceptance.
Warning: This blog contains spoilers.
At the end of At Liberty To Live, Luke discovers his true purpose – to change lives for the better, and he takes that ethos with him into An Undercover Dream. He wants to make a difference and soon he realises where he’s going to make it. When he goes to acting school and starts being the one who solves his friends’ problems and even for his whole year group, he starts to feel fulfilled. However, it can’t last.
Because the real self he has to accept isn’t the one he’s made himself into – it’s the one he’s been hiding from. As you’ve seen over the rest of the themes, An Undercover Dream is all about Luke’s new life that he’s plastered over the cracks of his old one. When it all starts crumbling down, it’s hard for him to really accept who he is and how that person can be any good.
What he doesn’t consider, is that it’s Luke Bright his friends admire, not some fake persona he’s built for himself. Luke Bright is the one changing lives and helping others, not anyone else. Even though he’s lost belief in himself, no one else has. And that’s why it’s so important for them to help him believe in himself again.
The theme of self acceptance isn’t just limited to this book, although it’s where it really starts to come to light. It feeds into book 4 quite heavily and it’s there where it makes its real impact. It’s something we can all learn from, because even though we may all try to pretend to be someone else and hide the parts of our lives we don’t want others to be aware of, being able to really accept the person we are is a strength.
And that’s why in a previous blog I mentioned that The Luke Bright Series is a love story – a story about learning to love your real self, even if no one else is willing to.
I end this blog with a quote from An Undercover Dream about self acceptance. About Luke really confronting what he’s meant to do with his life.
“I felt calmer and more focused than I had in weeks because I had been able to reconnect with who I really was. Saving lives was exactly what I was meant to do — I was Luke Bright.” Luke Bright – An Undercover Dream
Thank you for reading this blog, and next Thursday I’ll be back with the penultimate theme of An Undercover Dream, leadership. See you then!
