Love – theme blog series

Welcome to my eight-part blog series about the main themes in An Undercover Dream. You may have read my previous blog series on the themes of Atlantic Split and At Liberty To Live, so now it’s the turn of book 3 in the series. You can find the links to the previous blogs at the bottom of this blog post. There will be some crossover between the three books. This week, it’s the theme of love, which isn’t as soppy as it sounds. Because, whilst it wasn’t intended, love has become one of the biggest themes in the series as a whole and for Luke as well.

Warning: This blog contains spoilers.

The Luke Bright Series is, as well as other things, a love story. However, it’s not the sort of love story you’d expect, and you’ll find out in book 4 (and actually at the end of An Undercover Dream) that there’s a huge love story that’s been going on right the way through that you didn’t even realise. However, let’s go back to An Undercover Dream to discuss the love story that goes on in this book between Luke and Vi.

Luke and Vi’s first meeting is something you’d expect from a romance book, but in fact, it just so happened to be by chance. If Vi hadn’t stayed for Reebok in An Undercover Dream, there would have been mere months between the two of them crossing paths. So, the fact that Vi was in a relationship when she met Luke was a good thing!

When Luke started An Undercover Dream, he swore himself off relationships and love after the turbulent experience with Linda. However, he really didn’t stand a chance when he met Vi for the first time. Not only was there an instant spark between the two, she was British – and that was easily what clinched it. If Vi had been American, Luke could’ve resisted and stuck to his guns, but having someone who seemed completely made for him appear at the very moment he most wanted to remain relationship-free? It was always going to be a struggle.

And Luke did struggle. He struggled for months and though it was clear to absolutely everyone else, Luke held back and he wouldn’t let himself be with Vi. He didn’t feel as though he deserved her and wanted to protect her from a life on the run with him – but things weren’t that simple. Even when he knew he may have to leave, he still tried to convince himself to let go, but he couldn’t. Vi was his one – and the only person who he could really be himself with, and that’s all he really wanted. Something real. Especially after all his bad past relationships – Vi is completely different. And whilst he holds on for as long as possible, he could never hold back forever. Even when I was writing it, the chemistry was just too strong that it was a struggle for me to keep them apart until the right moment!

Luke and Vi’s love story is one that took a while to come into fruition, but in fact, it had always been obvious. And whilst it may seem cliche, it was never forced, because you can feel the chemistry between them and writing it is effortless. Sometimes, it isn’t about opposites attracting – sometimes it just is the person you have the most in common with who becomes the one you should be with. That’s the case with these two, but as I said before, Luke wouldn’t have cared so much if she wasn’t British.

So, what about that other love story? Well, let’s just say it’s one that’s been building for a while and it’s going to come to a head in book 4. It’s something that may surprise you. And of course, we can’t really talk about love without discussing that epilogue reveal…but let’s just say we’ll find out more about that later!

I end this blog with a quote from An Undercover Dream about love. It’s about Luke’s realisation of what he really wants from life and his relationships. It’s the first time he’s been honest about it. But, accepting it and taking a chance on it is something he’s absolutely terrified of.

“I want to find the one. I want to find that person who’s going to prove to me that I’m worth loving as I am, not as someone who they want to change me into or someone I’m pretending to be. I want to be able to be with someone freely, someone who understands and gets it, and will stick by me through everything. I want someone who I can…be me with.” Luke Bright – An Undercover Dream
