It’s been a weird few weeks. Usually I have a gap between publishing and getting back into writing, but this time, I couldn’t resist going back to my work in progress ‘The Signs Are Coming.’ However, I have noticed a massive difference between this book and the ones in The Luke Bright Series.
The length.
When I first began writing Atlantic Split, the first draft of that book was only 30 pages. It then grew to the hefty length of 480 pages when published, and the rest of the series has just got longer. However, my first full length draft of ‘The Signs Are Coming’ was only 90 pages, and I had already said everything I wanted to say. But I knew that definitely wasn’t going to be enough.
So, the last few days, I’ve been desperately trying to increase my word count, which is weird for me because usually it’s the other way round, and I have to find stuff to cut down. How do you create more content when you don’t know what else needs adding?
Well, I soon discovered that there were plenty of ways to elongate the book, and it started with adding in and expanding on the current scenes. I’ve written so many words this week, and I don’t think I’ve done that many in such short succession before. I’m lucky enough to be able to have more time this week to devote to this book before things get too busy again.
Plus, those characters are still misbehaving, and it’s becoming even more fun to write them, not knowing where they’re going to take the scene next.
It’s certainly been a week full of productive writing, and it’s been nice to work on a work in progress. However, I haven’t neglected Luke – I know that soon I’m going to have to cut that final fourth book down. But for now, I’m just enjoying being able to develop a different kind of project. One that’s very liberating and making my internet history searches very, very weird!
Guess that’s the one thing you need to know about authors – don’t even ask about our googling habits!
