Somewhere special…

Even though it’s the 1st of September, I’ve decided not to do my traditional 1st of the month blog, because today is a far more special day in The Luke Bright Series. It’s a pivotal point in An Undercover Dream, and whilst I won’t spoil too much, this blog is about why today in Luke Bright’s world is so significant.

WARNING: This blog contains mild spoilers

In An Undercover Dream, on September 1st 2019, Luke takes a journey to a place he hopes he can begin a new life. A life that he’s always dreamt of and for him, it’s a moment he’ll never forget. It’s a new beginning and it’s a day where he meets a set of people who quickly become an important part of his life. When I was writing this scene, I knew how impactful it had to be and in fact, I could draw on a lot of my own memories because when I first began University, I felt the same emotions Luke is going through today.

Going into a new place with new faces is exciting. No one knows who you are and you get to share yourself several times with the people you’re going to spend the rest of the year with. People who may even become lifelong friends. And you get the chance to start again. You can be whoever you want to be and for Luke, that’s exactly what he needs. He can hide his past, he can pretend to become a new person and he can live as that person quite happily. That’s what happened to me and I know how much I needed that new start without revealing my past to people I’d just met.

For Luke, today marks a new dawn for him and a chance he never got back when he was in London. He gets to relive his life the way he wanted without his parents choosing his path. Most of all, today is the day he gets to be a normal teenager. A normal nineteen-year-old doing the same as all of his peers. And a feeling of normal is something that people really take for granted when your life has been anything but. Believe me, I know.

It’s also the day Luke meets someone who becomes one of the biggest characters in The Luke Bright Series, and someone who becomes a massive part of his own life. But that we’ll come onto in another blog, once you’ve had a chance to read the book!

It’s the day where Luke finds his second home. And for Luke, whose greatest wish is to go back to his family in South Kensington, London, that’s how you know that for him, this place is somewhere truly special.
