When reading a book or watching a film, a really good twist can make all the difference. It can leave you hooked, wanting more, feeling shocked and checking back to see if there were any earlier hints at it coming. It’s a powerful tool, so this week I’m discussing how effective a twist can be and what to expect regarding the twists in my books.

A twist is a completely unexpected action or part of the plot that you just can’t see coming. There have been so many well thought out ones over time. You almost wonder, how did the writer come up with that? Well, sometimes it was always intentional or it could be a spark of genius.

There’s a massive plot twist that defines The Luke Bright Series and you’ll be finding out what that is soon, but some parts you’ll have to wait until book 4. I don’t even remember how I came up with it, but when I did, I remember how amazing that huge reveal would be to a reader. So, I have started dropping hints in the previous books – let me know if you’ve picked up on them!

However, whilst a twist should be unexpected, it can’t be something so unbelievable that it throws everyone off course. It has to make sense – or even better, make everything else make sense because of it. You almost want to feel like something is missing and this twist is that piece of the puzzle.

So, in theory you could write a twist in retrospect. You just need to make sure it doesn’t “look” like you’ve done it all on purpose, because that’s when things can seem predictable. Leave enough mystery but don’t make it appear out of the blue.
