This week, as I’ve been dipping back into another book, I’ve started to realise how different Luke Bright is from the protagonist of my work in progress ‘The Signs Are Coming.’ Whilst there are certain similarities and I generally write the same types of characters, the way they handle life is so different. In this week’s blog, I’m discussing the people at the centre of my books, and what makes them the perfect leaders for my stories.
If you don’t know him by now, Luke Bright is an extremely awkward, temperamental, big-hearted, emotional character. He’s fuelled by his feelings and frequently displays and discusses them. This couldn’t be more different than Dark – the protagonist in ‘The Signs Are Coming.’ Dark doesn’t display, express or confront his feelings, in fact, he truly believes he can live without having any.
The way I write these two characters is so different. With Luke, I can use so much emotive language and enthusiasm and passion for his cause, but with Dark, the tone is so different. There’s almost this huge apathy in how he tells his story, and in first person, it’s weird switching between the two. The other thing is, Dark swears an awful lot, and Luke doesn’t swear nearly as much. Writing Luke is so emotional and natural, but writing Dark is so freeing. I have to be in a certain mood to write as Dark because I really need to let go of all emotion to step into his shoes and really experience life from his dry perspective.
It’s so important to be able to choose the right person to lead your story, and it really depends on what kind of story it is and what kind of mood you want to convey. For me, Luke’s personality really gives way for a four-book series and you feel so sorry for him at times. For Dark, one book is more than enough for his growth arc and he conveys who he really is a lot quicker than Luke’s ever done. So it fits perfectly.
I really hope you’ve all become attached to Luke’s character and can’t wait to find out what happens to him in An Undercover Dream – don’t forget the first chapter is out MONDAY 1st JULY on my website! What I also really hope is that when you get to meet Dark, you’ll find him as compelling as I do, and love his attitude to the world. It’s good to know that within these two characters, there’s something really unique about them and though I do definitely have a type of character I use as my protagonist (young, male, usually quite messed up), they’re completely different people. And I’m sure if they met, they’d definitely either hate each other or become the best of friends.
Atlantic Split and At Liberty To Live, the first and second books in The Luke Bright Series are available to purchase NOW! An Undercover Dream – the third book in the series will be released in SUMMER 2019!
