A measure of success

Most authors get into writing because they love writing, but there’s always that little bit of you that considers what it would be like to be famous. To have your name known around the world for something you’ve written. This week I’m discussing what success looks like and how it can look quite different depending on who you are.

On the websites where you self-publish your books, success may be as simple as rating numbers, rank and sales. If you’re selling more, you’re doing well. But how far do you go with that? Is it multiple copies a day, is it just one a day? It all depends, I suppose, on where your bench mark is. For me, its if my numbers are any better than I’ve already had in the past, and sometimes that doesn’t look significant but it feels it.

Is it people who mention your book in public or talk about it on social media? Is it having a fan base and other people who discuss your work? I think that would be a pretty big measure of success if people are actually talking about it. When it’s no longer just you in this world but other people sharing it with you.

Or, going away from being published, is it just being able to keep writing well? Do the sales and numbers and fans even matter when you know you’re writing good content and you can continue to come up with great ideas? Even if you don’t share it with the world, being able to write well but not publish is a big achievement as there are many who do it the other way round.

I believe success is something very personal, and how you measure it is based on you as an author and what your goals are. Sure, you can see what other people are doing and what they want, but what you want is what really counts. I managed to make two ideas I’ve been stuck on for years work this week – and for me, that’s a huge win! So remember, your achievements don’t have to be huge, but still celebrate them as that. As achievements. It’s truly important for your growth as an author and for your self-esteem.
