Unbelievable…

A week ago, the European elections were held, and we got the results on Sunday. The newly formed Brexit party topped the polls in most areas, however, as a whole the pro-remain parties got the highest share of the vote. I felt this week it was important to discuss this topic and how it draws parallels to the Atlantic Split, which I always thought was unbelievable.

Whilst I won’t get into the deep politics, the Brexit party itself hasn’t been around long and whilst I don’t know much about their policies or campaigns, their main aim is to deliver a Brexit that the country was “promised” back in 2016. A hard Brexit. As the referendum vote did show the country was just about pro-leave, I can see how easy it is for people to hop onto this new, shiny party of promises because that’s what they believed should happen. It’s what they believed then and what they believe now. There’s probably people who also switched to believe that any other Brexit option, or remaining, make us worse off, and it’s become very popular.

One thing I’ve learnt over time, is that the people who won’t accept anything other than a hard Brexit and encourage the divides and hatred it will bring, are people who can’t be reasoned with. People who won’t believe that any other form of Brexit will do, and it’s only until we do see what a hard Brexit is that they will finally be able to see the damage it’s caused. If you try to argue with them and their point of view, all they will do is bring you down to their level. And that’s what’s so scary.

It’s scary that the people who people are supporting, not just Farage but people like Boris and even Trump, are the ones who have the most divisive views. The ones who are more than happy to be ruthless about how they gain their support, are okay with making false promises, and willing to live in worlds that will fester hatred. I know from my book series, that when people like this come into power, that’s when the world starts losing it’s chance at being reasonable.

However, there’s always a Bright side – a Luke Bright side. The pro-remain parties as a whole were given the majority of the votes – even more than the Brexit party alone – and that shows that people still believe that Brexit is wrong. The turnout was less than 40% in the U.K., and if that had been 100%? I don’t know if we would’ve seen the same result but I bet the reason why most people voted was so they could vote for the Brexit party.

So where was everyone else? Why didn’t everyone else vote? Is it fear? Is it apathy? Is it underestimating the power of the whole? Is it because they don’t believe they can drown out the loudest voices? I know, it’s hard to argue with stupidity, but it’s so important to instead fight against the biggest con of the past five years. And that is what happened – Farage conned people into believing he can deliver a Brexit that will work out. People have taken to his party like wildfire, but soon it’s going to fizzle out once they realise his views are unbelievable.

People are easily moulded and easily led, and that’s exactly what happened with the Atlantic Split. Fear spread and over-exaggerating leaders filled people with hype and fear and made them believe that this massive divide was the only way forward. They cultured countries to have no outside influence to make them think that it was “safe” when in fact it was just left festering hatred. Unfortunately, sensible isn’t something a lot of people believe in, and leaders like Farage know how to play on people’s emotions, and that’s why he got so many votes so quickly. Because he’s promising something that, if real, will only deliver disaster and hatred.

Whilst it’s hard to argue with them (leading to the uprise in milkshakes) it’s important not to stoop down to their level but instead build up knowledge, strong arguments and morals and fight for what’s right. I for one can see that, whilst people were drawn to this party, the overall message of pro-remain still…remains. If we can see that glimmer of hope still exists, we can cultivate it and keep it growing, and that means we may still have a chance to save this country. Before it becomes split apart.

It is hard to argue but it’s not impossible. We owe it to our country to fight for what we believe in, and I believe it can still be salvaged from Brexit.
