Making a mark.

Last Friday, a new exhibition opened at the British Library: Writing – making your mark. It showcases a whole variety of writing over the years and explains how this old yet powerful achievement has spanned centuries. But why has writing remained such a key part of life? That’s what I’m considering this week.

Writing in all its forms is communication, expression and a way of recording. Putting down thoughts, ideas, information, details. It’s a way of taking the spoken word and making it more permanent. It’s just become so vital to our lives where we can’t necessarily speak or communicate with everyone, but a way to get things through to others without verbalising it. I know for me, I’m a lot better at expressing myself through writing than I ever have been at speaking.

Over time, it’s form has changed so much and I’m glad it did, my handwriting is terrible! Being able to type is so much neater and quicker, especially when it comes to editing, but there’s still some magic in handwriting I think. It feels more personal.

Whether it be to just convey information, make reports or create fiction, writing, the expression of words is something I just find so fantastic. Just being able to put combinations together and show in whatever language a message that others can receive.

For me as a writer, it’s the basis of all I do, and I use writing for expression. I saw two beautiful quotes earlier that really describe it well:

I’m not a writer, not really. Just a lost soul looking for a combination of letters that might bring you home – Blake Auden

Writers – they who carry the weight of the lost souls who never got to live – Anon

What do both of those have in common? You’ll notice three words. I think that’s what writing, especially creative and expressive writing, really brings to people. It’s a way to find something that they’re missing by making their mark on the world.
