It’s been over a year now since Atlantic Split got published and almost six months since At Liberty To Live followed in its footsteps. An Undercover Dream is now not too far off, so how does this book differ to the others? Much like the glasses in the heading photo, what’s inside the books is very different, but they’re all still quite similar and recognisable as an overall series. Let me explain how in this week’s blog.
I compared Atlantic Split and At Liberty To Live previously and found a lot of similarities and differences between these, which makes sense as it’s a follow on. However, in some ways, An Undercover Dream is closer to Atlantic Split than it is to At Liberty To Live.
It follows straight on from where it’s predecessor left off, and though the characters we met back in the previous two books still appear, we see them a lot less than before. Where Atlantic Split showcases our trio and their friendship and its heightened further in At Liberty To Live, in An Undercover Dream, Luke’s venturing off alone. Sure, he still sees Steve and James, but their presence in his life is much less than before. It’s only natural — being on the run was their short term but in Luke’s life it’s his long term burden to carry and his alone. We however meet a new selection of characters, and in fact, there are a lot of similarities to people we already know in them.
We also have plenty new settings that Luke can explore. It’s a vast country and Luke has to try to find his place in the USA. And the way he approaches them is different, as is how he approaches the places he previously lived in.
The themes in this book too aren’t unrecognisable and certain incidents will make both you the reader and Luke recollect back to other past times. These parallels make up a huge part of the book and how Luke tackles new and familiar situations.
Which brings me onto the biggest difference and similarity in An Undercover Dream to the previous two books and that is who Luke grows up into. This book is huge for Luke’s growth, and the person he was at the end of At Liberty To Live is very different to the sheltered teenager in Atlantic Split. He becomes a very different person in An Undercover Dream, and this is mainly due to the people he associates with. However, that doesn’t mean the person he used to be is completely forgotten, and this rears itself in spectacular fashion. The connection back to Atlantic Split especially is one worth waiting for.
An Undercover Dream is a great third book, forming the peak of the series that then leads on to the dramatic finale. Just because we’re half way through doesn’t mean we’ve half of the action, adventure and excitement that occurs in the remainder of the series. There’s plenty more to come and I hope you’re all just excited as I am about it!
