A Significant Moment…

It’s nearly been a year since Atlantic Split was released, but in the alternate reality that Luke Bright lives in, it’s a much more pressing time. It’s fitting that the edit of book 3 is coming back today because today and tomorrow are the points where At Liberty To Live reaches the final climax and we drift over into book 3. It’s a big set of scenes which some of you may have read, and if you know the ending, you’ll realise that there’s a lot more left to come on Luke’s next adventure. So, in this week’s blog, I’m discussing the end of At Liberty To Live and why it’s so poignant. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Luke Bright has grown so much over At Liberty To Live – he’s really developed into a man and finally he’s setting off alone into the big wide USA. For Luke who has always had people beside him, James and Steve especially, to help him, the decision to take on a foreign country as a fugitive where everyone hates your kind is massive. It’s daunting, and it may seem near impossible for this nineteen year old. However, Luke’s got a plan.

I won’t go into detail as to what the plan is, but let’s just say that plans don’t always go to…well…to plan. However, he knows what he has to do. For Luke, this is now his life. Moving on, hiding out, finding new places to stay. Before, in the comfort of New York, he thought his life was settled, but in fact, there’s a whole 49 other states he could be exploring and that he has to take the journey alone. After all, they have their homes and their own lives. He can’t take them away from those when he strived so hard to get them back there. No, this is his journey. Whether he’s ready or not…we’ll find out. Though, the person he is at the end of At Liberty To Live is certainly the most grown up version of Luke we’ve ever seen. He knows what he has to do, and though he’s terrified, he’s determined to make a go of a new life.

That’s what book 3 is all about, and soon I’ll be able to reveal more about it. It’s a very key book in the tetralogy and it’s a very different Luke as our lead, but still the same awkward and imperfect hero we’ve all grown to know and love. You’ll see a lot more of Luke by himself in book 3 and as he meets new characters, you’ll see a very different side to him. I think that’s what makes it special, the ending of At Liberty To Live, you really feel like something is changing. Whilst the focus has been a lot on his relationship with others (and it will continue to be), the fact he’s setting off by himself means something really important. It means he’s finally getting his moment…
