Welcome to my eight-part blog series about the main themes in At Liberty To Live. You may have read my previous blog series on the themes of Atlantic Split, so now it’s the turn of book 2. Find the links to the previous blogs at the bottom of this blog post. There will be some crossover between the two books. This week I’ll be discussing theme five: Feminism. Warning: This blog contains spoilers.

Feminism, a huge theme, and one that is so important in the real world. That’s why I knew it had to be a core theme in The Luke Bright Series and especially in At Liberty To Live. Just because Luke is male, it doesn’t mean that he’s not a feminist. He’s an advocate against all prejudice, no matter who is affected by it, and he completely respects and understands that there should be gender equality. Something we should all take note of. Yet, a lot of people don’t quite understand what feminism is, yet it’s something that I believe is vital to know.
It’s not just about women getting more focus than men, it’s not about them blaming men, it’s about equality. Women and men should be completely equal. In all things. Simple as that. Unfortunately, the world doesn’t always see it that way, and there’s still lot of prejudice and stigma. I hope it’s one thing that in the future becomes a thing of the past and the definition becomes a lot clearer too. There’s still a long way to go, but I hope that in my book I’ve been able to tackle the issue and highlight where people seem to be going wrong.
In At Liberty To Live, the issue of feminism comes up with Linda Green. Her confidence has always been a huge part of her personality, but it takes a knock when she finds out what her fiancé has been keeping from her. The loss of trust leaves her damaged and unwilling to trust men, and Luke is one of them. It frustrates Luke a lot seeing someone so confident, feel so limited by standard gender roles. However, another character, Becky Tyler, is the perfect example of a feminist and the contrast between them comes quite clear for Luke. However, he’s determined to make Linda understand. You’ll have to give the book a read to see if he succeeds!
I really hope that someday people begin to realise that feminism is about women doing what they want and owning it. Not being shamed, not feeling they have to conform, just being themselves, and being respected for it. One day, women will be able to get equal rights with men, and women can finally have the same opportunities. Neil A. King is my pen-name, some of you may know, and the reason I chose to write under it is because it’s a name that I believe reflects me as a writer. It’s a name I believe is true to myself and the name I want to put out there as an author. However, it doesn’t make me any less of a feminist to do so. I’m putting my work out there and if this is the name that helps me get recognition so I have the opportunity to share my stories with the world, then that’s what I will keep doing. I’m using this pen-name now so I can share my views on the wrongness of prejudice with others, so that one day, in the future, other writers and people will be accepted for who they are, regardless of name, creed, colour or status. Everyone should be equal. I’m voicing my opinion because one day I believe there will be a better world, and I’ll do whatever it takes to help take steps towards that.
I end this blog with a quote from At Liberty To Live about feminism. It’s a quote from Luke to Linda, giving her the cold, hard facts that she may not want to hear.
“If you think that accusing men who haven’t done anything wrong just because one man has treated you badly is being a feminist then you need to go and get yourself some sort of dictionary because that is NOT what it’s about!” – Luke Bright, At Liberty To Live.
