Every Protagonist Needs An Antagonist

I feel like this blog is very appropriate following the reveal of chapter one of At Liberty To Live. Give it a read if you haven’t already.

Luke Bright has had a tough time of it, and a lot of it is due to his ex-police partner Marco Brown. When writing, I always knew Luke would be a strong character and over time throughout the series he grows and develops even more, but what use is a dynamic and fleshed out main character if he doesn’t have an equally strong opposition?

Though a main character is important, a villain is just as crucial to make their life difficult. To give their motives meaning and give them a struggle that moves the plot along. But the villain can’t be completely evil, the villain has to believe they’re completely in the right in what they’re doing. Think about if you had to write the story the other way round? Would you still be able to do it from the other point of view? Everyone has a backstory and villains are no different.

When I began writing the book series, I didn’t know what the plot of the villain would be as I was far more focussed on the hero. However, over the course of the series, it was one crucial moment which completely changed the whole course of the books. That moment made the books and it made the villain. Honestly? If it hadn’t been for that one brainwave, the books wouldn’t be half as strong as they are now and the plot would be entirely different.

Marco Brown is the perfect match for Luke and I can’t wait for you all the read the rest of The Luke Bright Series and find out Marco’s dirtiest secrets. Believe me, they’re worth it. I will admit, Marco is easily, following Luke, the best character in the series because of who he really is.

No matter how creepy, messed up or evil your villain is, in their mind, they are the hero. So in fact, every book in essence has two main characters (or groups of characters.) The protagonist and their antagonist. And if you’re lucky, their paths may become a lot more similar than you realise…
