The amount of commitment I’ve given to The Luke Bright Series has been unprecedented. There has never been another book or story I’ve written that can parallel it and though I have plenty of other ideas, I’ve never been able to finish them.
However, a couple of weeks ago I took on the challenge of going back to a story I have neglected for almost five years. When I re-read it and realised how much potential it had, I knew I couldn’t just let this lie for any more time, so I went back and set myself the task to complete it. And I did. It’s the first book I’ve completed since writing The Luke Bright Series and the sequels and prequels. But, it was a struggle.
Going back into the mindset I was in five years was a very difficult task. I’ve been through a lot since and my writing style has developed a lot. Even trying to work out what the plot was going to be was hard as little bits I had forgotten about were bound to get missed out. Even remembering the characters and their traits meant delving back into the past.
But the hardest thing was writing a first draft and accepting it wasn’t going to be perfect. It humbles you and took me right back to when I first began writing as a whole. Also, the first draft ended up at 90 pages compared to a finished book about Luke Bright which is over 400. But yet, the first draft of Atlantic Split was only 30 pages. It was weird but it’s all part of that very same process that I went through 12 years ago with Luke.
The book is called “The Signs Are Coming” and it’s a horror book directed again at young adults. It’s a stand-alone book following two young men from troubled backgrounds who discover a religious cult trying to destroy modern day London. Covering important topics such as science vs religion, emotions and brotherhood it’s a horror story that translates back into the real world providing plenty of food for thought. It’s told from the point of view of the main character Dark, who is an extremely fun character to write because Dark doesn’t do feelings, and though his close ally Irish lad Paul wants to follow his example, it’s clear they both can learn a lot from each other.
Whether I will publish this book one day remains to be seen but I will keep you all informed. It’s been fun to do something completely different and go back to my origins as a writer. At least now I know I’m not a one trick pony! I’m certainly going to take another look at the other old ideas I never pursued and give them another shot now my inspiration is back! Watch this space!
