As a writer once you publish your first book, it may feel a little…underwhelming. You may be expecting loads of sales and loads of reviews. Yes, some first time writers do get that, but most of us have to build up slowly. It’s easy to feel a bit disheartened, maybe you were expecting more? However, if you look at where you started to where you are now, it’s vastly different. Before you were a writer but now you’re published! Your book is available for people to buy! Even if just a select few read and buy it, it’s better than no one buying it. Right?
It’s all about managing expectations. Self publishing isn’t a get rich quick option, it’s one you persevere with to become an author. You have to put in more than you get out, whether that be money, time or effort, but at least you get something out of it. If you keep going, the reward is more likely to come in. If you stop, it definitely won’t.
I’ve heard on the grape vine the best way to make your first book more successful is to write a second, then a third and keep going until you can establish yourself. Until people know your name and know your books. It may take years, but at least you’ve made a start. Then one day when you look back you’ll see that all the effort you put in may be rewarded.
The best kind of response I’ve had to someone hearing that I’ve written and published my book is that it’s inspired them to write and publish too. I know then I’ve made a difference. I know I’ve made an impact. Just as other writers helped me to decide to write and self publish too, I’ve had that effect on someone else. I’d count that as a success.
