Welcome to my eight-part blog series about the main themes in Atlantic Split. Each Thursday, I will be discussing one of the themes in my blog, and this week it’s the final theme of morality. Warning: This blog contains some mild spoilers.
Theme 1: Prejudice
Theme 2: Growing up
Theme 3: Optimism
Theme 4: Courage
Theme 5: Friendship
Theme 6: Family
Theme 7: Bullying
Morality is the most important theme of The Luke Bright Series – standing up for your beliefs. Luke Bright lives in an alternate 2018 which has similar levels of equality and free-thinking as our modern day world, except for the Atlantic Split which has caused the UK and the USA to be enemies following the war. Though the cause is not something Luke knew much about, nor was particularly passionate about, he knew that morally the fact that two innocent prisoners were being framed for a crime they didn’t commit was wrong. Despite being the only person standing up against this massive cause and at such a young age too, Luke knows that this is a cause worth fighting for and his morality is what keeps him going.
Though young people reading Atlantic Split may not end up fighting a cause as significant or dangerous as Luke has, I hope that Luke as a character with all his strong morals inspires them to realise how important it is to remain true to who you are and your principles. These make up who you are as a person, and if it is important to you (and of course moral for the right reasons) then you shouldn’t let anything get in the way or change that. Though your views may not be easy for others to understand or accept, just like our differences, you need to be true to yourself and stick with it. There are plenty of people who hide or change who they are to fit in with others – a character from To Kill A Mockingbird springs to mind – Dolphus Raymond (have a read up on him) – however there’s only one person in the world like you. If you don’t be yourself, your true self, then no one else will be and soon you’ll have wasted your life being someone else. Follow your heart and follow your dreams. Being an author wasn’t something that people encouraged me to be and my initial life plan which I spent six years working on didn’t work out. I chose myself not to carry on with it and instead to follow my dream of becoming a published author. I didn’t let anything stand in my way once I had my clear break to write and publish and here I am today – a published author.
Luke does have doubts about sticking to his morals throughout The Luke Bright Series, and it’s not an easy journey believing in a cause which the whole world has been taught is wrong. It’s a lonely and trying experience, but deep down, Luke knows that he can’t change who he is and that if he gives up, he’d never be able to live with himself.
I end this blog with a quote from Atlantic Split about morality from Steve who’s standing up for Luke’s reasoning. It’s clear that, even though Steve and Luke had a tough start, Luke is a very admirable character and both Steve and James do have a lot of respect for him.
“Luke had his life destroyed because of a few stupid people who were so bigoted and prejudiced, and who tried to cause more friction and hate. He knows that’s wrong, and he’s got more morals than the whole of the UK and USA put together.” Steve Jackson – Atlantic Split.
