Optimism – Theme Blog Series

Welcome to my eight-part blog series about the main themes in Atlantic Split. Each Thursday, I will be discussing one of the themes in my blog, and this week I’m discussing the theme of optimism. Warning: This blog contains some mild spoilers.

Part 1: Prejudice

Part 2: Growing up

I class myself as a half-glass full person, despite having several trying experiences in my past, and I know that if I was a pessimist, I wouldn’t be able to be the strong, resilient person I am today. Optimism is such an important theme because without being an optimist, you lose hope and sometimes, you lose a part of yourself. It is an inner strength if, even in the hardest of times, you can remain positive and smiling and look towards the future.

Luke Bright’s surname – whilst at first it was just because of a person whose surname I saw on TV – is actually extremely fitting for his character. Throughout the book Luke’s mum frequently mentions looking on the ‘Bright’ side, relating to their surname. Despite the fact that Luke frequently loses hope and despairs over his situation, he remains hopeful that things will improve. Then, towards the end of the book, it all pays off when his life takes an unexpected turn.

Whilst it is easy to lose hope if things are going wrong or look at the world around you and believe it is a bad place, if you can keep your inner optimism alive, it makes life much easier. You can wallow and despair, or you can pull yourself through and fight through life’s challenges. Either way, the outcome may remain the same, but at least if you do it with positivity, you’ll likely have a better experience and know internally you’re becoming stronger.

I end this blog with a quote from Atlantic Split about where Luke Bright decides to progress through his challenges with optimism. It will be a hard task, one that certainly tries him throughout the next few books in the series, but Luke is extremely strong and he has a ‘Bright’ outlook on his future.

“I was going to make myself ready for whatever lay before me and embrace all the things I never knew. And yeah, it would take courage and a lot of optimism but I’m Luke Bright – it’s all in my name.” Luke Bright – Atlantic Split
